The new academic year is upon us, and many of you will have moved into your new rented accommodation.

According to new research, students are still far more concerned with where their next pint is coming from than looking after their basic safety needs at home! Apart from rent and access to university, students are most interested in having a good sized bedroom (39%), access to the pub (24%) and a double bed (14%).

National Grid is giving one lucky student a chance to win a year’s free rent and is here to help raise awareness of gas safety and how to stay safe from Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning in your student accommodation.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) has no smell or colour so CO poisoning can often go undetected and can be fatal. Just like you look after a car, you should take care of your gas boiler and have it serviced every year. Ask your landlord to get this done, and in the meantime be aware of the symptoms of CO poisoning which include nausea, light headiness, headaches, shortness of breath and dizziness.

And if you do smell gas, please call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
